Success for the first Innovathon Smart Life by SPIE
Paris, 25 June 2019 – From 14 to 16 June, SPIE ICS, a French subsidiary of SPIE, organised the first edition of its Smart Life Innovathon. This event mobilised talents with a range of profiles who are particularly motivated to come up with specific projects, in record time, relating to Smart Cities, Smart Buildings and Smart Companies.
Diversity of projects, diversity of talents
With 7 competing teams, the first edition of the Smart Life Innovathon by SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, was the success it washoped it would be. Over the course of 54 hours, the participants, who had a range of profiles (students, freelancers, young people of working age, senior citizens and SPIE employees), formed teams, presented their ideas and worked to come up with specific, innovative solutions with the aim of improving the day-to-day lives of both businesses and individuals. The key strength of the event was the great diversity of the projects responding to social, environmental and business issues. “The other strength that quickly became apparent was the pragmatism of each participant, their ability to form a team and move to create high-quality projects that can be implemented quickly!”, commented Mohsen Karimi, Design, Innovation and Transformation Director at SPIE ICS and founder of the Innovathon by SPIE.
3 winning teams and a “helping hand” prize
Decided on by a panel consisting of Agnès Van de Walle (Microsoft), Valentine de Lajarte (Smart Buildings Alliance, Partager la Ville), Pierre Etienne Bardin (La Poste Group) and Cédric Périer (SPIE ICS), chairman of the jury, the prizes were awarded based on four criteria: market approval, business model, execution and design and the innovative nature of the solution.
- First prize: “CODDY”. An intelligent control box to improve the security of building access.
- Second prize: “SMART WALK”. A solution providing an audio description of the environment in real time, to facilitate travel for blind and partially sighted people.

Support throughout the event
With a schedule boasting numerous conferences (“The real-time experience economy”, “How to overcome the challenges facing start-ups/large groups”) and the presence of sixteen mentors with wide-ranging backgrounds (SPIE, Oracle, Microsoft, Obconnect, Germinal, Station F, Ville d’Issy-Les-Moulineaux and Sorbonne), the attendees unanimously welcomed a particularly convivial working environment that was conducive to the emergence of innovative ideas. The event also brought together attendees from some SPIE France subsidiaries (SPIE Industrie & Tertiaire, SPIE Nucléaire and SPIE ICS), who came to take part in this focal point for innovation.
“I came mainly out of curiosity”, commented Antoine de Noblens, an engineer within the tertiary division of SPIE France. “The experience was fascinating, very convivial, and it familiarised me with new working methods that I will now be able to put into practice.”
“For most attendees, this Innovathon Smart Life was a ‘first’”, stated Eric Debray, founder of Mageli and mentor. “This shows that innovation isn’t restricted to certain insiders, but is open to all to ‘create the world of tomorrow’.”
“This Innovathon Smart Life is the product of a desire shared by a few people who, thanks to their enthusiasm, transformed an idea into an ambitious initiative that contributes to the spirit of Innovation developed within the SPIE Group”, stated Cédric Périer, General Manager of SPIE ICS. “This first edition has shown the power of working together and the desire, creativity and enthusiasm of all involved to promote Smart Life. Obviously, in view of such success, I’m announcing the next edition of the Innovathon Smart Life for 2020!”
